Marine Flexible Impeller Applications
Flexible impellers are important components in many marine pumping systems. Depending on the pump application, they may be used for engine cooling, bilge pumping, water transfer, and general-purpose marine pumping.
For proper fit, match the replacement impeller to the pump manufacturer's specifications. Confirm the diameter, shaft dimensions, drive type, blade count, and insert configuration before installation.
Preventative Impeller Maintenance
Jabsco recommends replacing impellers at least once a year, or more frequently depending on engine and pump usage. An impeller can potentially remain serviceable for longer under certain operating conditions, but scheduled replacement is an important part of preventative marine maintenance.
It is also recommended to carry a spare impeller on board. A damaged or worn impeller can affect the operation of a marine cooling or pumping system, making a replacement impeller an important item to keep with your onboard maintenance supplies.
Impeller Replacement Tips
Replacing a flexible impeller can generally be accomplished by removing the pump end cover and extracting the impeller from the pump body. A Jabsco Impeller Removal Tool can be used to remove the impeller, or suitable channel-lock pliers can be used to grip the impeller hub.
Avoid using screwdrivers to pry out the impeller. Doing so can damage the pump body or sealing surface and may create leaks.
Before installation, grease the new impeller with a lubricant suitable for the pump and impeller material. Lubrication can help with installation and provides lubrication during initial pump operation. Install the appropriate gasket and end cover according to the pump manufacturer's instructions.
Always verify the pump manufacturer's installation requirements and recommended lubricant before servicing the pump.
