Critical Safety Compliance Guidelines
- The Break Strength Rule: When rigging your trailer, ensure that each individual cable or chain meets or exceeds the Gross Trailer Weight (GTW). A 5,000 lb fully loaded boat trailer requires two separate 5,000 lb rated lines.
- Criss-Cross Rigging: Always loop the cables or chains in an "X" pattern underneath the trailer tongue. This forms a cradle that will catch the coupler and prevent it from digging into the asphalt if the main ball connection fails.
- Isolate Breakaway Switches: If your boat trailer has surge brakes with an emergency breakaway cable assembly, do not loop it through your safety chains. It must be attached independently to the tow vehicle frame with enough slack so it only pulls if the trailer fully detaches.
