Throwable boat cushions are essential marine safety devices classified by the U.S. Coast Guard as Type IV Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs). Recreational vessels 16 feet or longer must carry at least one throwable flotation device that is easy to reach, in addition to required wearable life jackets.

  •  Keep it accessible: Store the throwable cushion in an open, easy-to-reach location. It should not be kept inside a closed compartment, locker, or buried under other gear.
  • Use it correctly: A Type IV cushion is not worn like a life vest. In a rescue situation, the person in the water should place their arms through the webbing straps and hold the cushion securely against their chest while floating on their back.
  • Inspect it regularly: Check the outer shell for tears and the foam core for crushing or damage. A waterlogged or damaged cushion may lose buoyancy and perform poorly in an emergency.
