Marine Flexible Impeller Applications
Jabsco flexible impellers are used in compatible marine engine cooling pumps, bilge pumps, transfer pumps, and general-purpose pumps. The flexible impeller design allows the impeller blades to move against the pump housing as the pump operates.
Because impellers are application-specific, always compare the impeller diameter, shaft dimensions, drive type, blade count, and insert configuration with the original impeller or pump manufacturer's specifications before purchasing.
Preventative Impeller Maintenance
Jabsco recommends replacing impellers at least once each year, or sooner depending on engine and pump operating conditions. Even when an impeller appears to remain functional, scheduled replacement can help make marine maintenance more predictable.
Always carry a spare impeller on board. A replacement impeller is an important part of an onboard marine maintenance kit, particularly for boats that depend on an impeller pump for engine cooling or other pumping applications.
Replacing a Jabsco Impeller
To replace the impeller, remove the pump end-cover screws and carefully extract the impeller from the pump body. A Jabsco Impeller Removal Tool can be used to grip and remove the impeller hub. Channel-lock pliers may also be used when appropriate.
Avoid prying the impeller out with screwdrivers, as this can damage the pump body or sealing surface and potentially cause leaks.
Before installing a new impeller, grease the impeller with a lubricant recommended for the specific pump and impeller material. Lubrication can make installation easier and provide protection during initial pump priming. Reinstall the gasket and end cover according to the pump manufacturer's instructions.
