Outdrive / Outboard Antifouling

Outboard lower units and sterndrives require specialized copper-free antifouling paint to protect them from marine growth. Traditional bottom paints contain cuprous oxide (copper), which triggers severe galvanic corrosion when it reacts with aluminum underwater. To keep your metal components safe and clean, you must use formulas powered by alternative biocides like zinc pyrithione or cuprous thiocyanate.

Application Tips

  1. Never skip the primer on bare metal: If you sand down to bare aluminum, you must apply a specialized metal primer (like Interlux Primocon or Pettit Protect) first. Antifouling paint will not adhere directly to bare metal.
  2. Prep factory finishes: If your lower unit's original paint is still in good shape, simply scuff it with 80-grit sandpaper or a scuff pad to create physical grip before spraying.
  3. Build thickness: Always apply at least 2 to 3 thin coats rather than one thick layer. This builds the necessary biocide thickness to survive the boating season.
