Rigging and Installation Best Practices
When replacing the downrigger cable on your spool, following proper terminal setup ensures you don't lose downrigger weights or gear:
- Thread the Terminal Sleeve: Slide the cable through your terminal sleeve, loop it through the Scotty Terminating Kit piece or coastlock swivel, and feed the tag end back through the sleeve.
- Crimp Securely: Use specialized crimping pliers to compress the sleeve tightly over the 150-lb cable. Snip off any overlapping excess wire.
- Protect with a Stopper: Keep or slide a rubber auto-stop bumper over the crimped connection to prevent the terminal hardware from hitting and damaging the downrigger tip pulley.
- Always Use a Snubber: Clip a downrigger snubber between the termination point and your cannonball weight. This handles the shock of a bouncing weight and safely snaps off first if the weight catches a bottom obstruction, saving your main cable line.
