Scotty 1071 Laketroller Clamp Mount Manual Downrigger is a compact, highly portable downrigger optimized for small watercraft like aluminum boats, canoes, and kayaks. It features an integrated C-clamp mounting system that allows you to easily attach and remove the unit from your boat's gunnel or transom without drilling holes.

Set-up & Operation Instructions

1. Mounting the Unit

• Loosen the T-handle on the integrated No. 449 portable clamp.
• Position the clamp over your boat's transom or side gunnel (up to 2 inches thick).
• Tighten the clamp firmly by hand until secure. Do not use tools to over-tighten, as this can damage the nylon or aluminum housing.

2. Attaching the Weight

• Fasten your trolling ball (ideally a 3 lb. or 4 lb. lead weight) to the snap swivel at the end of the stainless-steel cable.
• Tip: Using a latex downrigger bungee between the cable end and the weight is highly recommended to cushion the boat rail and prevent line snaps if the weight hits the bottom.

3. Deploying Your Fishing Line

• Cast or let out your fishing lure approximately 30 to 40 feet behind your boat.
• Open the jaw of the included Mini Power Grip Plus release clip and place your fishing line securely inside the pads.
• Lower the downrigger weight slightly into the water so the system is under tension.

4. Lowering the Downrigger

• Hold the top knob/spool handle firmly with one hand.
• Gently loosen the central drag brake tension knob to let the weight descend.
• Count the handle rotations to track your depth (1 full turn = 1 foot) or monitor the weight's descent on your fish finder.
• Tighten the drag brake knob back down once your target depth is reached.

5. Retrieving the Line

• When a fish strikes, your fishing line will automatically pull free from the release clip, allowing you to fight the fish directly on your rod.
• To bring the downrigger weight back up, hold the main handle and crank clockwise. Match your count to the depth deployed to ensure the weight doesn't smash into the boom end.

Critical Safety Warnings

• Weight Restrictions: Never use a weight exceeding 5 lbs. Exceeding this threshold can warp the plastic spool, bend the fixed boom, or pull the portable clamp off your gunnel while moving.
