Interlux Hard & Soft Antifouling's bottom paints generally fall into two main categories: hard antifouling paints and soft, or ablative, antifouling paints. Each type is designed for different boating conditions, maintenance routines, and performance needs.

Hard paints create a durable, porous coating that gradually releases biocides, while ablative paints slowly wear away as the boat moves through the water, continually exposing fresh biocide. Interlux also offers hybrid options that combine characteristics of both paint types.

Hard vs. Soft Antifouling Paints

·         Hard antifouling paints: These contact-leaching formulas dry to a tough, abrasion-resistant finish. They are well suited for fast powerboats, racing vessels, and boats that are frequently scrubbed or trailered. Because the coating does not wear away, layers can build up over multiple seasons and may eventually require heavy sanding or stripping. Hard paints may also lose effectiveness if the boat remains out of the water for extended periods.

·         Soft antifouling paints: Also called ablative or self-polishing paints, these formulas gradually wear away during use. This controlled erosion helps prevent heavy coating build-up and reduces the amount of sanding needed at haul-out. Ablative paints can generally tolerate prolonged air exposure during winter storage without losing chemical effectiveness.
